Canada Region

QUANTA CANADA COMPANIES

Scope of work: Installation of 14km of 508mm (NPS20). The entirety of the 508mm pipeline alignment was within the Transportation and Utility Corridor. This portion of the project also included five major crossings; a 1.73km intersect HDD of the Elbow River, a 1.42km intersect HDD of Fish Creek Provincial Park, a 0.75km HDD crossing of Anderson Road, a 0.49km HDD crossing of 162nd Avenue, and a 0.47km HDD crossing of Spruce Meadows Trail.



Installation of 1.89km of 323.9mm (NPS 12) lateral that tied into the Glenmore Connector tie in station. This portion of the project also included two major crossings; a 0.78km HDD crossing of the 90th Avenue Overland, and a 0.78km HDD crossing of the future Southwest Calgary Ring Road.



Community engagement included A&amp;B utilizing multiple Indigenous-owned businesses as well as employment of 10 Featherstone Mentorship Program mentees, three of whom were from the Tsuu T’ina Nation and participated in and graduated from A&amp;B’s Featherstone Mentorship Program. This resulted in over $710,000.00 in local community spend.



Challenges / Uniqueness: Extraordinary seasonal weather conditions for Calgary area during construction. Urban organizational requirements, coordination with other contractors tasked with completion of Southwest Calgary Ring Road provided coordination complexity.

Urban Pipeline

Valard was selected by NextBridge Infrastructure to construct the Ontario East-West Tie Line Project. The project scope included providing project management, material management, construction permitting, and the installation of approximately 290 miles of double-circuit 230-kilovolt transmission line connecting Hydro One&#8217;s Wawa Transformer Station, Marathon Transformer Station, and Lakehead Transformer Station. At the end, 1,387 towers were erected in a line of 485.5 km, 4,903.6 km of conductors were installed, 5,548 foundations were needed and employed 39 First Nation communities.



Uniqueness: The project overcame numerous challenges during construction, such as&nbsp;a global pandemic and a historic forest fire activity in the region.



Start of Construction: October 2, 2019



Completion Date: The last tower was up on January 28, 2022, and achieved project completion on March 2022.

East-West Tie Line Project

Barlow Solar Park was constructed on approximately 61 hectares of land within the City of Calgary. The facility is situated on a capped phosphogypsum stack (a byproduct of fertilizer manufacturing), making productive use of a hazardous waste site that would otherwise have limited development potential. This presented unique challenges for design and construction; the facilities&#8217; 70,000 solar panels are supported by 6,307 concrete ballast foundations to minimize ground disturbance on-stack.

We continue building meaningful strategic relationships with Indigenous communities and 3rd party Indigenous-owned subcontractors/vendors to support new opportunities for co-creating economic and social value within Indigenous communities.
In 2013, Arnett &amp; Burgess, a Quanta Canada company, created a formal employment mentorship training program to provide on-the-job mentorship, training, and hands-on pipeline construction work experience for Indigenous community members interested in working in the energy industry.
The Featherstone Mentorship Program engages, develops, and employs Indigenous community members, and provides mentorship and hands-on training in entry-level pipeline and facility construction activities. We are proactively growing capacity in our industry by building our next generation of pipeline construction leaders.
The program provides tangible training and work opportunities to local people in areas where we work. This program is a key component of how we engage with Indigenous communities and other stakeholders on our projects.

MENTORING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ FUTURE

Swan Lake First Nation chose a community member to participate in the Featherstone Mentorship Program with Arnett &amp; Burgess, a Quanta Canada Company. With support from Swan Lake community leadership, the member was provided financial assistance for travel and lodging until his first living-away subsistence kicked in.
Halfway through the program, DC was doing great. While he was completing the required weekly learning modules and quizzes, he was developing into an eager crew member, learning the pipeline way of life, what it is like being away from home, and always traveling. DC updated the A&amp;B Indigenous Liaison on the next A&amp;B assignment and project he was moving to, how eager he was to complete the program, and how once he graduated from the Featherstone Mentorship Program he wanted to carry on as a pipeliner with A&amp;B.
We were really pleased to hear it.

AN EAGER WORKER & LEARNER

The Kingsvale Transmission Line Project in British Columbia is the first electricity transmission line majority-owned, operated, and maintained by an Indigenous group in Canada. Valard partnered with the Lower Nicola Indian Band Development Corporation (LNIBDC) and Trans Mountain Canada on this historic project.
Indigenous subcontractors made up 75% of those hired for this project. High safety standards meant that we had zero lost-time or serious injuries to employees or contractors.
