Underground Pipeline Services’ Sleeving Cutter
Underground Pipeline Services, a proud member of the Quanta Services family, has developed a precision safety tool designed to protect gas line infrastructure and the crews who work on it: the Sleeving Cutter.
The sleeving around a carrier pipe serves one purpose: protecting the live gas line running beneath it. But the tools crews used to cut through that sleeving introduced hazards of their own. Bits that slipped under pressure could cut straight through the protective guard and into the carrier pipe itself. Crushed fingers from oversized, difficult-to-control designs were already being logged as reportable injuries. A single gas leak from a damaged carrier pipe can cost upward of $10,000 – and that is before accounting for the risk of ignition. The existing tools were not just inefficient. They were dangerous.
The Sleeving Cutter was built to solve both problems at once. Running on a bearing system that prevents bit slippage, it nearly eliminates the risk of cutting into the carrier pipe during operation. Lighter and more compact than previous designs, it reaches around and under the pipe without the bulk that made older tools difficult to manage. Available in both pneumatic and electric versions, the tool pulls itself along while the crew guides it — clean, fast, and significantly safer than anything before it. Its design has already drawn interest from power crews and fiber teams well outside its original application, pointing to a reach that extends far beyond the gas sector.
